What will you put behind the mihrab?
I recreate miniaturized spaces of the major Abrahamic religions and other spiritual places. Although I am an aethiest, I am in awe of the architectures and patterns these major world religions use to represent the power of God.
This piece, made of dark walnut, honors Islamic religious architecture by recreating the mihrab. The mihrab is an architectual niche created with 3D shapes tessellated at the crown of the alcove. Simple lines, triangles and rectangles are organized into a logical pattern work that is meant to symbolize God's ability to create all of creation with simple elements and molecules. Traditionally, the niche is built into the wall of the mosque that faces Mecca, so this architecture is not only beautiful, but built with a very specific function in mind.
Ideally something can be placed behind the gated window to gaze through the mihrab. That something should be meaningful to you and respectful of the mihrab's original function to direct one's attention towards something important. Do you have something special in mind?
